What To Do In An HVAC Emergency During A Heatwave

This guide will help you navigate an HVAC emergency by providing you with the essential steps to take when your AC system breaks down.

Step 1: Asses the Damage

When your AC stops working, the first step is to assess the damage. Give you AC a quick inspection to determine what the issue may be. Run through the following questions:

  1. Is your thermostat set to “cool” and is the temperature set correctly? This is a simple fix you can do on your own.
  2. Are there any tripped breakers on your electrical panel? If so, reset them as necessary. If the AC unit is drawing too much power, it might trip the breaker.
  3. Is your system making unusual noises, like gurgling or banding? This could indicate mechanical issues.
  4. Is there water pooling around your unit? Leaks can indicate refrigerant issues.
  5. Is there weak or no airflow? This could mean you have a blocked duct or failing compressor.
  6. Is the air coming from the vents warm? Warm air could indicate refrigerant or compressor issues.

Following your HVAC repair service, your home may take some time to return to normal temperatures. You will feel the cool air from the vents but it will take time to make your home feel comfortable again (approximately 1 hour to cool 1°). If the system hasn’t caught up within 24 hours, call your HVAC provider for advice.
